Proper Diets for Hamstersby LizardLoungeHamsters will walk up to their food dish and put a bunch of food in their mouth. They use pockets in the side of their cheeks to store the food. They will then walk away to a hiding spot or a spot that they feel safe in and empty the food from their mouth. They will then slowly eat the food from the ground until it is gone. Hamster Mix Commercially prepared hamster mix should make up the main part of any hamsters diet. Hamster mix is good because it contains a variety of foods that make for a healthy hamster. As a plus most hamsters really enjoy this type of food. For smaller or younger hamsters you can take some sort of a small bird seed and mix it in with their hamster mix. Alternatively, you can look for a hamster mix at the pet store which already contains an abundance of seed. Hamster mix usually can be stored for long periods of time so it is a great item to enjoy the savings of buying in bulk. If you are changing your hamsters diet (even just the brand of hamster mix it receives) do your best to gradually make the switch. Hamsters are very sensitive to changes in their diet so mix the two together before completely switching. Fruits & Vegetables When feeding hamsters fruits and vegetables it is important to not give them too much at once, especially in the beginning. If a hamster is all of a sudden given large amounts of fruits or vegetables it can become very ill. If you hamster does fall ill, stop feeding all fruits and vegetables until it becomes better. It should then be safe to slowly reintroduce these foods into their everyday diet. Hamster Treats When in a pet store looking for hamster mix you have most likely noticed packages of 'hamster treats'. Hamsters tend to love these things as you can probably guess by the name, however they should not be given in large quantities. Hamster treats tend not to be the healthiest for the hamsters but in moderation should cause no harm. Never feed your hamster any chocolate or other sweets. These food can cause your hamster to become seriously ill for long periods of time. About the Author Article courtesy ofGoArticles.com |
