Oh rats! And Tigers too!

July 7th, 2008

I have friends who really love their pet rats and can go on and on about how smart they are and how loving and, well…on and on. They are going to love this story about how Giant Gambian Pouched Rats have become the heros of Mozambique. Mozambique has a real problem with land mines that have been placed all over the country. Several solutions have been tried, but the best so far has been trained rats! They are less prone to disease than dogs in their country, and seem to really enjoy the work! Best of all, the rats are light enough that they can detect the mines, without setting them off.

The Moscow zoor recently moved their white tiger cubs into a public area for everyone to enjoy. The photos with this article are too cute.

Enjoy!

A blog no real Animal-Nerd could resist

June 9th, 2008

I was just adding some photos of our Orioles to Naturalist Notebook and voting for myself while I was at it, when I noticed on the Top Nature Sites list a blog I could not resist visiting, Ugly Overload! Ugly Overload shares photos and a few words about an “ugly” animal every day or so. I have a soft spot for many of the uglier animals on the planet, like Warthogs, Gnus, and the Coelacanth - I inflicted photos of him on you earlier this month :) - among others. There are just animals walking the earth that you have to think were built by committee. All kidding aside, it is a very informative blog, too.

So you go enjoy that, and I’m going to see about adding some articles to Animal-Nerd today. I am determined to teach myself CSS (I use it now, but only the basics) and have decided that Animal-Nerd has also grown to a point of needing a bit of redesign, so I’m going to be working on that soon, too. Now don’t worry - I am the worlds biggest critic of “new is not necessarily improved” so I’m not going to do anything to make the site a pain in the ass to navigate or use. If anything - I hope to improve the navigation and declutter the home page a bit.

Later!
