Przewalski Horses in the news

Przewalski Horses in the news A few days ago I saw a news story about a Przewalski Horse who had undergone a reverse vasectomy. The surgery was successful and it is hoped he will soon be bred to a suitable mare. The Przewalski is our last truly wild horse, and was pronounced extinct in the wild in 1970. However, there was a small population surviving in zoos and parks around the world. Through careful breeding this unique animal has been keep alive, and is now being reintroduced into the wild in Mongolia.

I have a real soft spot for wild horses of all kinds, and so this inspired me to do a few coloring pages for Color-Your-Own.com of the Przewalski Horses. Perhaps they will inspire others to help preserve this important species.

Heartwarmer and Hope - Fridays update and quote

May 30th, 2008

Here is an irresistible heartwarmer for the day, a series of photos of a kitten and parakeet who are clearly the best of friends. Looking at that blog, it looks like anyone who enjoys Animal-Nerd will probably enjoy that blog, too! I grabbed the feed :D

The Discovery Channel brings us great news and a fun photo to go with it. A camera set up a remote jungle refuge captured images of the rare Javan rhinocerous - the rarest rhino. The photos were of a female rhino and her calf - and ended quite abruptly when the female spotted the camera and decided it might be dangerous!

Last but hardly least - our Friday quote:

“Animals are such agreeable friends - they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms”
George Elliot

See you next week!
